Metro Atlanta Urban Farm Summer Training Program
An Urban Agricultural Learning Experience!
June 1-July 30, 2010

NEXT Steps will host up to 15 students from the Mayor's Youth Program and the Georgia Teen Works
Program to develop a model for Georgia's first urban agriculture-based, edible schoolyard curriculum for
the Atlanta Public School System's Farm to School to Kid initiative.

Our goal is to tie the aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics from the urban
agriculture industry to career options via the development of edible schoolyards at each participating
school affiliated with the new Metro Atlanta Urban Farm in College Park, GA.

Through social entrepreneurism, an IT
cyber-learning lab (pending), and STEM-
based learning activities, students will use
business management strategy, information
technology, environmental sciences, special
event management, and community service
to

  1. Gain a more valuable collection of
    skill sets;
  2. Better understand how multiple
    S.T.E.M. disciplines are needed to
    improve the health and lifestyles of
    their families and communities
  3. Introduce S.T.E.M.-based career
    options and opportunities;
  4. Gain a greater appreciation of the
    resources available to them “in their
    own backyard.”; and
  5. Increase the value of their own
    perceptions about their community,
    themselves and their capabilities.
